You never win playing by the rules
The first statement is a fact that all entrepreneurs can agree on. The second is bad advice.
NO EASY MONEY, You never win playing by the rules, are the title and tag line of
my first Dale Hunter crime thriller novel about an entrepreneur fighting crime and corruption in the 1980s.
The themes of the novel are interesting to compare to one of my highly recommended books of advice for management, First Break all the Rules. My version would be “forget the conventional wisdom, be creative, do it your way.”
There are a lot of clichés and books full of the standard advice on how to succeed in business. They’re all useful starting points for your thoughtful consideration, but usually hopelessly over-simplified generalizations and not useful guides for developing a strategy and action plan to get the results you want.
My own mantra for entrepreneurs has the same deficiencies. Everything you need to know in six words – Have a plan. Avoid the mistakes. Easy to remember and a helpful stimulus to start your day everyday, but you do need to dig deeper and try harder to get it right to achieve your goals. Hard work and attention to the details are still necessary. Nevertheless, occasionally stepping back from the action and re-considering the guiding principles may help to align your efforts and your resources more effectively.
Keep a list of inspiring and useful clichés and find one that best fits your current challenges. I’m not sharing my list, you’re on your own! Enjoy the journey.
Be better. Do Better. Be an Enlightened Entrepreneur.
