Strategic boycott is required

Tactics for a trade war

A boycott is a very crude tool. It usually requires turning a blind eye to the inherent hypocrisy and inconsistencies in the application of a boycott, while causing significant unintended negative consequences and having little or none of the intended impact on the targeted villains.

For example, people say, “I’m boycotting America and not travelling there again until Trump is gone.”

But they’re still buying on Amazon, using their iPhone, watching Netflix, and driving their Tesla. Which means they’re actually helping to finance Trump’s tariff war and his backers and facilitators with their purchase choices.

And their version of boycotting America is causing low-income immigrant workers in the U.S. hospitality industry more pain and loss of jobs and struggling Canadian businesses who are losing revenue due to high tariffs on their export business are not picking up domestic income because customers are still choosing to continue buying American products – from automobiles, to soft drinks and cosmetics, or Florida orange juice and Budweiser beer.

So we may feel good because at least we’re doing "something," even if it accomplishes next to nothing. Doing "something” is not enough to make a difference. We have to be more strategic and more selective to be effective and deliver the message to the people we want to change their attitudes and their behaviour.

So please step up for Team Canada and the global resistance against abusive, autocratic, irresponsible self-serving political leadership.

Stand up and speak up in defence of our sovereignty and democratic rights, our freedom and civil rights, and social justice for all. We can all make a difference.

Small steps forward will eventually lead to the finish line we all desire.

Be better. Do better.
