We are seeing a style of management from the U.S administration that we’ve never seen before.
Led by the Trump/Musk tag team, in a corrupt conspiracy with their major financial backers who are among the few who will be protected and profit from the negative consequences for everyone else, we can already conclude that it’s not an effective management style that will deliver better results.
We used to call it zero-based budgeting – start from zero and justify every expenditure from the first dollar to the last. That’s certainly better than the approach of simply adding x% to last year’s budget, which leads to management ensuring they meet their budgets, spending every dollar before the fiscal year-end. There’s effectively a disincentive to save money and deliver results under budget. Nobody wants to work with lower budgets next year.
But creating chaos and failing to deliver services by using the blunt tools of firing employees and turning off the cash flow are not going to get better results. We’re seeing a strategy of destructive chaos that seems to be focused on first, break all the rules, then re-write the rules to serve the leadership, not the people. Where are the creative alternatives that will follow destruction of the current organisations and processes for delivering services?
In the real world, creative destruction means replacing an old business model or existing operating process with a more effective alternative. Analysis and planning usually precede the destruction and the alternative solution is ready to replace the old before destroying it.
Much of what we are seeing from this management team seems to be driven more by personal objectives and an agenda that is clearly in the self interest of the leadership, not the people they are leading. That style of management and the negative consequences for everyone are not what the people were expecting from new leadership.
