Time for a change?
My dad used to say, “If you’ve been doing it the same way for ten years, it must be wrong by now.” But what about the other fatherly advice, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
How do we decide what to change and what to keep doing the same way?
It can be tempting to think it must be time for a change. Especially when you’re watching a competitor or a rival doing it differently and appearing to succeed. Your own team is crying out, “Let’s try that!” But that’s not us. That’s not what our loyal customers and staff are expecting from us.
It’s important to distinguish between the enduring sound principles of good management and good customer service and the latest fad or fashionable shiny new toy that is attracting everyone’s attention.
Yes, we have to adapt and respond to changing customer expectations, shifts in the competitive landscape, and the introduction of new tools and technologies. But no, we do not have to chase every trend or bright idea that appears on the horizon.
Know what you do well and keep doing it. Keep your head up for better ideas and take the time to assess whether they’re right for you and your business. Continue the constant search for improvement and fix what’s broken. Occasionally, try something completely different, but cautiously.
Be better. Do Better. Be an Enlightened Entrepreneur.
