Permavucalution? Be the goat-bat.

Updated: Feb 25

Permavucalution?

Be the goat-bat.

I owe a lot of my random ramblings to the inspiration and food for thought

found in the weekly news magazine, The Economist. This article is thanks to Bartleby in The Economist issue of January 6th, 2024.

In looking forward to the New Year, Bartleby coins a new descriptor for the

period –  “permavucalution,” which is a combination of “permacrisis” and the acronym VUCA, which refers to the constant state of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. He expects three current dominating trends will lead to this state of permavucalution – artificial intelligence, climate change and the continuing lack of suitable talent to meet the challenges. It’s not a comforting prospect to consider for the coming years.

As a good analyst should do, however, he also proposes a solution to avoid falling behind or crashing on the obstacles to success. He explains we will have to sprint to stand still and be as agile as a mountain goat with the radar vision of a bat. Can you be the sprinting goat-bat? Will you have the courage, strength, and humility to lead a team to not only survive but thrive? Those are the challenges in the age of permavucalution.

More food for thought. Before we take it all too seriously though, it’s worth noting that Bartleby presents his analysis in the form of a letter to employees and signs it as your CEO, Stew Pidd.

I have nothing to add.
